The Dark Age refers to the Early Middle Ages, between the fall of the Roman Empire in the 4th century A.D. and the foundation of the Holy Roman Empire and the High Middle Ages in the 10th century A.D. Dark Age art is characterized by Christian motifs and takes many different forms including, but not limited to, illuminated manuscripts, rich embroidery, and precious metalwork.
