Archaic

The Greek art of the prosperous 6th and early 5th centuries B.C. is known as Archaic. The most famous examples of Archaic Greek art are the monumental buildings of this period, as well as the kouroi and kourai (stylized statues of human figures), and black- and early red-figure pottery. The statuary of the archaic period is unique in that the figures smile. Although the exact meaning of this expression is unknown, the so-called “archaic smile” seems to convey a feeling of peace and well-being. The most notable examples of Classical Greek art are the monumental statues, both in marble and bronze, made not only as free-standing works of art, but also to adorn such temples as the Athenian Parthenon. The Classical period is also known for its beautiful red-figure and white-ground pottery.
