The art of ancient Egypt, which was produced in the Nile valley throughout antiquity, can generally be divided into eight periods: Pre-Dynastic (from the 6th to the 3th millennium B.C.), Old Kingdom (ca. 2649-2150 B.C.), Middle Kingdom (ca. 2030-1640 B.C.), New Kingdom (ca. 1550-1070 B.C.), the Third Intermediate Period (1070-712 B.C.), Late Egyptian (ca. 712-332 B.C.), Ptolemaic (from the 3rd through the 1st century B.C.), and Romano-Egyptian (ca. 30 B.C. through the 2nd century A.D). Most Egyptian art was either created specifically for burial with the deceased or was used in life and then subsequently buried with an individual for use and pleasure in the afterlife. Therefore the art of ancient Egypt is well-known for works related to the afterlife: mummies and their sarcophagi, pyramids, and wall paintings that decorated tomb chambers and mortuary chapels. Although highly stylized and symbolic, Egyptian conveys the religious and mythological beliefs of the ancient Egyptians with clarity and distinction.
