Dark Age

The so-called “Dark Age” refers to the Early Middle Ages, between the fall of the Roman Empire in the 4th century A.D. and the foundation of the Holy Roman Empire and the High Middle Ages in the 10th century A.D. Art of this period is characterized by Christian motifs, and takes many different forms including, but not limited to, illuminated manuscripts, rich embroidery and textiles, and precious metalwork.
